Psychiatry

What Is Psychiatry?

Psychiatry is a medical specialty focused on protecting and improving mental health, as well as diagnosing and treating mental disorders. Problems related to emotions, thoughts, and behaviors form the core areas of interest in psychiatry. Psychiatrists evaluate the biological, psychological, and social causes of mental illnesses and create individualized treatment plans.

In psychiatry, preventive mental health services are carried out alongside diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Medication therapy, psychotherapy, and when necessary, additional supportive treatments are the main components of care.

Which Conditions Does Psychiatry Treat?

The psychiatry department is responsible for diagnosing and treating a wide range of mental disorders that disrupt emotional balance and negatively affect daily life. These include:

  • Depression and mood disorders
  • Anxiety disorders (panic disorder, social anxiety, etc.)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa)
  • Sleep disorders
  • Personality disorders
  • Substance, alcohol, and behavioral addictions

With accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment, many psychiatric conditions can be effectively managed, significantly improving quality of life.

Common Mental Disorders in Psychiatry

Depression and Anxiety Disorders

Depression may present with symptoms such as persistent sadness, loss of interest, low energy, and changes in sleep and appetite. Anxiety disorders are characterized by ongoing worry, restlessness, and physical tension. If left untreated, both conditions can severely impact daily functioning.

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder characterized by alternating periods of mania and depression. Emotional fluctuations may disrupt social, professional, and personal life.

Schizophrenia and Psychotic Disorders

Psychotic disorders involve disturbances in perception of reality. Delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized thinking are hallmark symptoms of these conditions.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

OCD is characterized by recurrent intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions) performed to relieve anxiety. Treatment often includes a combination of psychotherapy and medication.

Diagnostic and Treatment Methods in Psychiatry

The diagnostic process in psychiatry begins with a detailed clinical interview and mental status examination. Psychological tests and additional assessments may be planned when necessary.

Medication Therapy

Medications such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, and anxiolytics play an essential role in symptom control. Pharmacological treatment must always be conducted under medical supervision.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy includes treatment methods that help individuals understand and modify their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Common psychotherapy approaches include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Supportive psychotherapy
  • Family therapy
  • Group therapy

In selected cases, advanced treatment options such as Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) may also be considered.

How Does the Psychiatric Evaluation Process Work?

During psychiatric evaluation, the individual’s medical history, current symptoms, mood, and behaviors are examined in detail. Based on this assessment, a personalized treatment plan is developed and monitored through regular follow-up visits.

The Importance of Early Diagnosis in Psychiatric Disorders

Early diagnosis increases treatment success and helps prevent chronic progression of mental disorders. Timely intervention allows better symptom control and helps preserve social and occupational functioning.
